• Shizen Noho is a documentary project about people who cultivate Japanese vegetables and herbs by Natural Farming in East Sussex. The company called ‘Namayasai’ (meaning ‘fresh vegetable’ in Japanese), is run by a Japanese woman and her English husband. Generally speaking, the youth of today do not appreciate working on farms. There are, however, some young workers and volunteers who engage in agriculture which aroused my interest in this project. Natural Farming is an approach to farming established by Masanobu Fukuoka, a Japanese farmer and philosopher who described his agricultural philosophy as ‘Shizen Noho’ (Natural Farming). It is a sustainable farming method in which all material inputs are natural. Natural Farming differs from conventional organic farming in its observance of the laws of nature and respect for the ‘rights’ of crops and livestock, treating them almost spiritually.
